Rob Tucker - "Searching for a Still Life"

2024/04/03-06/02

Contemporary by U has invited New Zealand artist Rob Tucker to hold his first solo exhibition in Asia, titled "Searching for a Still Life." The meaning behind the exhibition title goes beyond the literal interpretation of "still life" and deeply implies a pursuit of a "peaceful life."

Tucker re-examines the theme of "still life" by rearranging objects on the table, exploring all possibilities within the composition, fully showcasing his ritualistic approach to life. His work is an extension of Outsider Art, a free and unrestrained art form that encourages artists to express creativity and imagination without constraints during the creative process.

With bold and vibrant colors, Tucker’s works use compositions and mixed media—such as wine stains—to depict still life and landscapes, evoking the methods of David Hockney, the pop art master of the mid-20th century. The overall atmosphere of the paintings is light and leisurely, as if one is transported to a relaxing holiday destination.

The exhibition title, "Searching for a Still Life," offers a subtle and metaphorical interpretation. Traditionally, "still life" refers to an art genre depicting inanimate objects. However, in a broader context, or as an exhibition theme, "Still Life" refers to the pursuit of a tranquil life.

The title might suggest a search for moments of calm or the aesthetic of stillness. Under this dual-meaning theme, it may also hint at the artist's personal journey or exploration—whether in artistic expression or in finding peace, balance, and meaningful moments amidst the chaos of life.
