Emi Sekiguchi is from Chiba, Japan. She graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Faculty of Art at Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2011, and studied in the Graduate School of Art and Culture with a focus on sculpture at the same university in 2013. At the beginning of her sculpture career, Sekiguchi saw the image of a lonely child standing alone through the curved logs. As a result, she began creating works with children as the subject matter, and because she is a woman, her works often focus on girls. She said that she often draws inspiration from scenes of a person standing alone in the wind or waiting silently for someone. The figures in her works have lost their hands, representing those inexplicable feelings in one's heart.
Sekiguchi is skilled in wood carving, and her works emphasize the expression of color and wood texture. She carefully carves lifelike fruits and sweets out of Japanese camphor wood, and gives them various expressions, such as the gaze of a person in love, a dispirited expression, a deep gaze, a frown of discontent, a helpless sigh, a tired look, and an anxious expression. The works often feature cherries in love with each other or cherries in unrequited love, reflecting the artist's inner emotions and rich imagination, bringing multiple layers of feeling to the audience.
