“ Satellites: Objects Orbiting Around Us ”“ Satellites: Objects Orbiting Around Us ”

Solo By Taher Jaoui

"My art was originally intended to stimulate the imagination of the viewer in an energetic and funny way."

"My work is about energy, positivity, imagination and fun."

"One of the main influences is the lessons I learned in my acting class. An actor always needs to have a specific goal to succeed in a scene, but he also needs to trust his own feelings and live fully in the moment."

"I don't paint if I feel out of touch with my emotions or if I don't have a specific intention when I leave a mark on the canvas. I was also inspired by famous expressionist painters such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Cy Twombly. I admire primitive art and the history of the stories behind it. I'm also influenced by African culture, and I find African totems fascinating."

"I never paint without music, mostly I listen to rock and classical music."

TAHER JAOUI

About the Artist:

TAHER JAOUI, a Spanish artist born in 1978, graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris in 2007.

In 2013, the artist started his artistic journey with the creation of collages. They are mainly made with old family photographs found in Berlin flea markets. These works are a contrast between old photos and modern images, which open a window to his artistic inspiration.
The artist began to focus on painting in 2015, when he explored different techniques that allowed him to transform his emotions about the present on canvas. Prior to entering the art world, he worked as an engineer in the financial industry, so in many of his works, one can observe the representation of mathematical calculations and formulas. His artistic practice is influenced by the philosophies and attitudes of abstract expressionism, African primitive art, graffiti, malfunction art, cartoons, and post-war abstract expressionism of the 1950s and 1960s, which in turn informs his painting style.

Taher's abstract works are created subconsciously and intuitively, balancing his thoughts and feelings, and the canvas serves as a conduit for his vision of energy, rebirth, transformation, and enlightenment; these rich creations are the artist's way of documenting the expression of his emotional process. They allow the viewer to connect, interpret, and interact with the paintings and objects in the space through their own imagination, cultural background, childhood memories, associations, and personal lives.

He has exhibited in New York, Berlin, Hong Kong, Tunisia, Miami, Beirut, and Seoul, and his work is part of many private and public collections, such as fairs and galleries, in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States. These works have been exhibited in various countries and have received positive feedback and recognition from collectors. The artist's interpretations leave us with mysterious abstractions stacked in vibrant colors, and for many viewers, Taher's work brings them a sense of innovation.

About the Exhibition:

Satellites: Objects Orbiting Around Us" is a series of works curated by Contemporary by U Gallery, which invited Spanish artist Taher Jaoui to hold his first solo exhibition in Taiwan.

In this exhibition, the artist Taher's background in mathematics, mathematical symbols are a natural language for him, and the visual impact of the contrast effect on the canvas is instantaneous. The visual impact of the contrasting effects on canvas is instantaneous. The painting plays with the composition of circular shapes and lines, creating a balance in each composition.

The canvas unveils the composition of mathematical symbols and engineering formulas, figurative and abstract compositions to connect elements and forms.

In the process of creation, he sees the forms and elements of the work orbiting between them and around space like a satellite, and these celestial bodies are not scattered haphazardly throughout the universe; they form an orderly system of movement, large or small.

TAHER's work is also inspired by African masks and African cultural traditions. The vast area of Africa is also home to a multitude of tribes; masks are abstract carriers of different sacred and ancient spirits. The aesthetics and mysticism behind them give him inspiration for his work.

His unique style comes from his mastery of the use of familiar materials (oil, acrylic, charcoal ......) and the repetition of these processes. He has achieved this through years of accumulation and constant experimentation and practice, layering pastels, oils and acrylics in a way that has more to do with emotion than physics. A mysterious concept of distance, he uses his brushwork in a unique way. The canvas serves as a conduit for understanding his thoughts, emotions and visions; and documents Taher's thought and emotional process.

Therefore, through this exhibition, in many of Taher Jaoui's works, one can observe mathematical calculations and formulas in the expressive images, and the rest of the energetic abstract colorful brushstrokes. The artist's confidence and calmness are the source of his work.

Opened on November 25, 2023, visitors are invited to come and discover the mysterious mathematical symbols and engineering formulas of Taher's compositions of abstract brightly colored depictions that bring our senses to the emotions on his canvases, to feel the artist's gaze on the world and the interwoven pile of works and energies.
